Creating space.
So my sister and I have been doing a 30 day meditation challenge. We are on day 10. I have to admit that I missed a day, and that’s why it’s a challenge, it’s hard. Most things worth doing are challenging.
So we, my sister and I, have been sitting for 10 minutes daily. Supporting each other thru the practice of focusing on our breath, noticing our thoughts, accepting the distractions, trying to witness our minds at work. The idea behind the practice is that by learning about ourselves, we may find stillness, space inside.
Meditation is an age old practice. much older than you or I. The word meditation stems from meditatum, a Latin term that means ‘to ponder.’ Through the practice of meditation, we seek to find a connection with our body in the everyday moments that usually pass us by. So many of us, pay very little attention to our routines, the day to day choices and experiences. Meditation uses our own focus as a way to evaluate all of these processes we usually take for granted.
In recent decades, public interest in mindfulness meditation has soared. The growing popular acceptance has sparked more scientific attention. In recent decades, researchers have been gaining insight into the benefits of practicing this ancient tradition. By studying mindfulness meditation, they’ve found that learning to pay attention to our current experiences and accept them without judgment might indeed help us to be happier.
But even better, it has no negative side effects, it’s free, it’s portable, and you carry it around with you all the time. So, why not give it a try? I challenge you to give it a try. 10 minutes in the morning focus on your breath and notice what comes up. Try not to judge your experience, instead just witness the experience.
